All Creatures Great & Small is a premier animal talent agency representing animals for film, television, and commercial work. They needed a website that would:
Custom Development from Scratch
Rather than using a WordPress template or website builder, I hand-coded the entire site from the ground up using HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript. This approach gave me complete control over every aspect of the user experience and allowed me to create custom animations and interactions that aligned perfectly with the client's vision.
Hand-Crafted Vector Animations
I created smooth, performant animations using pure CSS and JavaScript without relying on animation libraries or frameworks. Each animation was carefully timed and optimized to ensure visual polish without compromising page load speed or performance on mobile devices.
Mobile-First Responsive Design
The site was built with mobile users as the priority, then enhanced for larger screens. I wrote custom media queries to ensure the layout, navigation, and animations worked seamlessly across all device sizes, from phones to large desktop monitors.
Systematic Asset Organization
Throughout the 3-month development process, I maintained a clear file structure and naming convention for all code files, images, and resources. This organization allowed for efficient iteration and made it easy to locate and update specific elements as the client's needs evolved.
Zero External Dependencies
The entire site was built without external libraries, frameworks, or dependencies. No jQuery, no Bootstrap, no animation libraries—just clean, hand-written HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. This approach resulted in faster load times, smaller file sizes, and complete control over every line of code.
Performance Optimization
I optimized all images for web delivery, minified code for production, and implemented lazy loading for below-the-fold content. The result was a visually rich site that loaded quickly even on slower connections.
Cross-Browser Compatibility
I tested and refined the site across all major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) to ensure consistent rendering and functionality. Custom CSS was written to handle browser-specific quirks without relying on polyfills or compatibility libraries.
Iterative Client Collaboration
Some requested features pushed the boundaries of what was practical for web performance. I built prototypes early in the process, showed the client different technical approaches, and collaborated to find solutions that achieved the desired visual impact while maintaining technical soundness.
Unique web presence: The custom-coded solution provided exactly what the client envisioned—a professional, polished website that stands out from template-based competitor sites in the industry
Fast performance: Without the bloat of frameworks and libraries, the site loads quickly and runs smoothly across all devices, providing an excellent user experience for casting directors and producers
Complete brand alignment: Hand-coding every element allowed for perfect alignment with the client's brand identity and creative vision, something that would have been difficult to achieve with pre-built templates
Scalable foundation: The organized code structure and clear documentation make it easy to add new animal profiles, update content, and expand functionality as the agency grows
Custom web development isn't about avoiding tools for the sake of it—it's about choosing the right approach for the project's specific needs. When a client has a unique creative vision and the budget allows for custom work, hand-coding provides control, performance, and differentiation that templates can't match. The challenge is balancing that creative ambition with technical constraints while delivering a site that works beautifully for real users.
